CARBORUNDUM

Following a Collagraph tutorial with Paul Croft at the School of Art, Aberystwyth, I was introduced to Carborundum. What is this thing called Carborundum? A form of dancing? A confusing question? No, it is a powder of silicon carbide used as a collagraph printmaking technique. Carborundum grit is applied to the surface of a plate and gives a gritty texture.

Today I had a day in the workshop experimenting with it, and had a good result overall.

I wanted to add a grey colour as well as black, and only had my usual graphic chemical ink I use for lino, which didn’t really work as effectively as the intaglio ink, but still gave interesting results. I worked on my study of Gwawr Ifans who is a friend/Welsh translator/Farmer/Local Lamb supplier. I will post more about Gwawr soon when I have more examples of work to show.
